A person with green and yellow face paint wears a large crown with orange flame-shaped points, seen in profile at an indoor event.

The Year Book / Chapter Three / 03

Return of the Crown

East went dark. West answered in light.

35 frames / CROWN_003 / ACCESS RECLAIMED

Follow the chapter into sound

The map tore.

I followed the seam west. The old skyline withdrew until it was only a line in the weather. Ahead, the country opened like a question too large to answer. I carried what still mattered. Everything else became distance.

A man in a red shirt closes his eyes and wraps his arms around a broad tree trunk in a sunlit forest.
01

Begin with an embrace

Portraits

The return begins with an embrace. Bark, closed eyes, hands finding their place. After all our talk of rising, I like a photograph that brings us back to the ground. Criminal Code has inspected the throne and recommends this tree. It has better roots.

A silver pendant shaped like two feathers hangs over a red shirt and black leather vest.
02

The weight of a small thing

Details & places

Two silver feathers carry the light against red and black. I can photograph their shape without pretending to know everything they mean to the person wearing them. Aurelian leaves that part of the record open. Some stories belong to the person who chooses when to tell them.

Artists work at easels in a crowded indoor room, with spectators gathered around their brightly lit canvases.
03

Make room for the makers

Life & culture

The room gathers around unfinished work. Brushes move; people lean closer. There is courage in letting someone watch you make a choice before you know whether it will hold. Criminal Code wants front-row seats. I want to remember how much possibility fits inside a crowded room.

White floatplanes sit at a harbour dock beyond a blurred fence, with trees and a mountain across the water.
04

Permission to depart

Details & places

The fence stays soft; the planes wait beyond it. A departure can begin long before anything leaves the dock. I have spent enough time looking through barriers to appreciate a frame that leaves the distance clear. Aurelian is packing light. Criminal Code has already claimed the window seat.

A woman in a black leather jacket, black shorts and tall boots looks back beside a wooden patio fence and dark umbrella.
05

The street meets your stride

Portraits

A glance turns back; the street keeps its lines. The jacket, the boots, the angle of a shoulder all get a say. I am more confident giving direction now, and more willing to let the person in front of me improve it. Style becomes a conversation.

The horizon offered no instructions.

I arrived with more sky than certainty. The wind moved through all the places a plan used to be. There was no grand entrance. There was the next hour, and then the hour after that. Somewhere in the dark, Criminal Code struck a match.

Polished wooden ship wheels and maritime objects fill a dim display beneath a bright rectangular window.
06

A room full of possible routes

Details & places

A wheel waits beneath the window, surrounded by other ways of holding a course. The room is still, but the shapes remember movement. Aurelian starts an inventory. Criminal Code asks which wheel steers the future. I am busy watching the light travel across the wood.

A woman with dark hair and bangs rests her arms on a concrete railing and looks toward the camera, with city buildings behind her.
07

A gaze that holds its ground

Portraits

The city rises behind a pair of resting arms. The gaze gives the frame its centre. A strong portrait can arrive without a grand gesture; sometimes it needs a comfortable place to lean and enough trust to meet the camera. The rest is paying attention.

Sunlit hands reach into a fitted wooden case holding pale chess pieces, beneath the sleeves of a black leather jacket.
08

Before the first move

Details & places

Before the board becomes a contest, someone has to bring out the pieces. I like this part: the patient work before the clever move. Criminal Code claims she has a strategy. Aurelian asks whether everyone gets a turn. The hands keep setting the table.

Two people in black shirts and aprons laugh together in a brightly lit event space.
09

Joy belongs on the team

Portraits

Two aprons, two smiles, and a laugh that does not need an introduction. The longer I do this, the less I want a photograph to interrupt the good thing happening in front of it. Blueberry has declared this essential Kingdom business. The meeting may continue laughing.

A person wearing glasses and a patterned headscarf uses a laptop aboard a boat at dusk, with water and high-rise buildings behind them.
10

An office with a horizon

Portraits

A screen catches the last light beside a much larger horizon. Making things can take us deep into a small rectangle; the water keeps the world wide. Eonix asks what happens when we look up. Aurelian saves the draft. Criminal Code requests more windows that actually open.

A lone cyclist rides through a long graffiti-covered alley beneath metal fire escapes, with a plume of steam along one wall.
11

Keep walking through the frame

Details & places

The alley offers a hundred competing marks. One person keeps walking through them. A photograph can hold all that texture without asking the figure to explain the city. I am learning to leave room around a life. Criminal Code approves of a route with more than one exit.

I made an edge to stand on.

Small choices began to hold. A morning met. A promise kept. A hand accepted when it reached toward mine. Slowly, the world acquired a shape I could move through again. Aurelian left a light in the margin. I learned to find it.

A dark mantel clock sits on a wooden windowsill between softly lit pink checked curtains.
12

Let the afternoon take its time

Details & places

The clock keeps count; the curtains let the afternoon through. I once wanted every photograph to announce itself. This one can speak softly. Aurelian has stopped turning pages for a moment. Even Criminal Code knows when to leave a quiet room exactly as she found it.

People browse long rows of vinyl record bins inside a bright hall with tall windows.
13

The songs we find in company

Life & culture

Hands move through records, looking for a name, a sleeve, a sound worth taking home. The archive becomes a meeting place. That is a future I want for the work: something people can enter together. Amélie is searching for a memory. Eonix is listening for what comes next.

A woman in a long green and gold dress stands in a narrow passage between a textured wall, a wooden fence and a bright blue building.
14

Colour takes the narrow way

Portraits

The passage is narrow; the colour has room to move. A dress, a wall, a line of sky can build a whole stage when someone is willing to stand there. Criminal Code asks who approved the location. The photograph offers a more interesting answer.

A woman with long braids and metallic eye makeup closes her eyes in sunlight, with one hand beside her face and brick buildings behind her.
15

A moment entirely your own

Portraits

Eyes close, a hand settles, and the sunlight follows its own quiet path. A portrait does not always need to look back at the viewer. Sometimes the strongest thing I can make is space for someone to be present on their own terms. The frame can wait.

Eight women in colourful patterned dresses stand together outdoors, some wearing white floral headpieces.
16

No one has to disappear

Portraits

Eight people share the frame without becoming the same person. Patterns meet, expressions differ, and the photograph gets richer for it. This is the kind of Kingdom I want to build. Criminal Code counts the crowns. Aurelian makes sure we have remembered the faces beneath them.

A person with green and yellow face paint wears a large crown with orange flame-shaped points, seen in profile at an indoor event.
17

Wear the work

Portraits

Here it is: colour, a profile, a crown shaped like flame. The title of the chapter suddenly has an object to stand beside. Criminal Code wants to borrow it. Aurelian reminds her that a photograph is an invitation to look. The person still belongs to themselves.

The city entered through the lens.

Vancouver arrived one frame at a time. A stranger making music. A colour against the rain. A face turning toward the light. The camera gave me a way to meet what was in front of me. An unfamiliar street could become a place I wanted to see again.

A man wearing glasses, a dark jacket and a blue shirt sits among tall, sharply textured dark rock formations.
18

Find your own foothold

Portraits

Stone rises in sharp columns; a person finds a place among them. Scale gives the frame its drama, but the face keeps it human. Abel remembers what the fall taught the rise. I am learning to make photographs that can hold both strength and somewhere to rest.

A person in a yellow bucket hat, white sleeveless shirt and patterned flared trousers stands on brick-lined steps holding a light-coloured bag with red motifs.
19

Carry your own weather

Portraits

A yellow hat brings its own weather to the brick and concrete. The stairs give the portrait a rhythm; the person gives it character. Confidence has become less about controlling every detail and more about recognising when the details already know how to get along.

An artist in a pale grey shirt leans close to a canvas with a fine paintbrush, wearing an earbud as people gather behind him.
20

The next mark is yours

Portraits

After the crown, a brush meets the canvas. The work continues at the scale of a hand. Aurelian keeps the record; Criminal Code opens the next door. I bring the camera and the willingness to begin again. There is room beyond this frame. less we fear the fall

A hand reaches between vinyl records in protective sleeves inside a wooden record bin.
21

A song before the needle

Details & places

A hand pauses between sleeves. Somewhere in this row is a sound that might change the afternoon. I like the attention that comes before choosing. Amélie would recognise the feeling: a memory can begin returning before the needle has touched the record.

A man wearing glasses, a dark jacket and blue trousers sits on concrete steps with one hand resting on a metal railing.
22

A place to take your time

Portraits

Concrete, a rail, a patch of shade, and someone making the steps their own. A portrait can grow from the way a person settles into a place. I am becoming more comfortable letting that happen before I reach for another direction.

A large white balloon marked FREE HUGS in red letters floats against a blue sky and soft white clouds.
23

An invitation above the noise

Details & places

Two words rise above the noise. A small invitation, given a great deal of sky. Bella approves of the sentiment. Criminal Code has questions about the balloon budget. I keep thinking how much a photograph can say when we let a simple thing stay simple.

The crown changed weight.

I stopped waiting for a room to recognise me. There was work to make and a voice to recover. Abel kept the record of the fall. Criminal Code guarded the door, loudly. I began to understand what I could carry forward, and what I could finally set down.

Peacock feathers and striped brown feathers fan out around a curved green frond against a pale wall.
24

The crown was already growing

Details & places

Blue eyes in the feathers, a curve of green, a little theatre in the arrangement. The Kingdom has spent chapters discussing crowns; colour keeps inventing its own. Aurelian studies the pattern. I follow the small changes in light that make a familiar texture worth seeing again.

A man in a white shirt leans over cards on a worn wooden table, with bottles, cups and a bright window behind him.
25

Some decisions need a table

Portraits

Hands meet the table; the cards keep their possibilities open. The window does most of the lighting, and the room supplies the rest of the story. Criminal Code wants to know who is dealing. I am happy to stay with the moment before anyone decides.

A white restroom sign with two figures and a left-pointing arrow is fixed to a wooden fence beneath an overcast sky.
26

Even the Kingdom needs directions

Details & places

For once, the cryptic message comes with an arrow. Every grand journey eventually needs a useful sign. Criminal Code calls this excellent infrastructure. Aurelian has declined to write a prophecy about it. I am keeping the photograph anyway; ordinary things belong in the story too.

A woman in a sleeveless charcoal dress sits on the forest floor, leaning on one hand among dark trees and exposed roots.
27

Let the forest set the pace

Portraits

A dress catches the light while the forest keeps its shadows. The pose has room to breathe inside that darkness. I trust a quieter frame more than I used to. It can hold a person clearly without asking the whole background to explain itself.

A hand brushes grey clothing on a rack beside olive green, yellow and red-star-patterned garments.
28

A feeling at your fingertips

Details & places

Before a style becomes a silhouette, there is texture beneath a hand. A colour catches us; a fabric makes us pause. Photographing these small decisions reminds me how personal looking can be. The person choosing gets to decide what feels like them.

Two green parrots with yellow heads perch on a metal enclosure among dense foliage, with branches and feeding bowls below.
29

The council has other plans

Details & places

Two green figures survey the room from their own level. The leaves make a fine backdrop; the birds owe the camera absolutely nothing. Criminal Code has nominated them to chair the meeting. Aurelian is waiting to see whether either of them accepts the agenda.

Something held beneath my feet.

For a moment, the ground stayed still. I did not name what came next. I made a little room for it: a photograph not yet taken, a song without its first line. Beyond the last frame, the horizon had begun to warm. I left it open.

Tall shelves filled with record sleeves line a dim room beneath track lighting, with a ladder leaning against the shelving.
30

The archive needs a ladder

Details & places

The shelves keep rising, and somebody has thought to bring a ladder. An archive can hold years of other people making something worth keeping. Eonix wants to hear everything. Aurelian suggests starting with one record and giving it the attention it deserves.

A man in a light beige jacket and olive trousers rests against a dark wooden fence beside timber buildings and a patch of grass.
31

At home in the afternoon

Portraits

Timber, grass, a pale jacket, a comfortable place to stand. Some portraits come together through these modest agreements between a person and a place. I have grown more certain about the light I want, and more curious about what someone brings to it.

A woman in a white and purple floral dress sits on a white chair and cuts lavender stems with scissors.
32

Gather what you can tend

Portraits

Purple repeats from the dress into the flowers. A hand gathers a stem; the scissors make a careful choice. Spark would recognise this kind of work. Growth asks us to notice the small thing in front of us, even when we are dreaming of a forest.

A musician in a wide-brimmed black hat and glasses plays a long-necked wooden string instrument beside a cafe window.
33

The street finds a melody

Portraits

A hand follows the long neck of the instrument while the other brings the strings to life. The street becomes somewhere to listen. This is why music keeps finding its way into the photographs: attention changes when another person gives a moment a sound.

A man in a dark sweater rests against a wooden railing in front of a large weathered timber building.
34

Stand where the light can find you

Portraits

The roof draws a long line toward the sky; the portrait holds its place below. I like the balance between a building with so much presence and a person who needs no elaborate introduction. Aurelian keeps the frame open. There is room to stand here.

A woman in a pale pink coat and dark trousers stands on a wooden walkway before a blue building and looks to the side.
35

A little room for what comes next

Portraits

A pale coat, a blue wall, a gaze travelling beyond the frame. The chapter has grown, and the view still has somewhere to go. Criminal Code checks the next door. I keep the camera ready, with more patience now for the life that has not entered the picture yet.
