The Year Book / Chapter Two / 02

The Seed

Beneath everything that fell, something small was still awake.

26 frames / ROOT_002 / GROW TOWARD SOMETHING

Follow the chapter into sound

Nothing announced the beginning.

The silence had changed its texture. After so much motion, a small thing could finally hold my attention. A hand at work. A bird above the reeds. Light resting on a face. There was a whole language here, waiting for me to stop speaking.

Golden reed seed heads rise against a clear blue sky, with softly blurred stems in the foreground.
01

Small things learn the sky

Details & places

A reed bends without surrendering its place. I am learning to stop mistaking gentleness for a lack of strength. Aurelian leaves a note in the margin: growth can be quiet and still change the view.

A smiling blond child in a grey shirt reaches toward the camera against a softly blurred green background.
02

Reach before the answer

Portraits

A hand reaches into the space between us. Before the careful explanations, there is curiosity. The lesson for the photographer is simple enough to spend a lifetime practising: be someone the moment can trust.

A man in a backwards black cap, grey hood and denim vest looks down against a plain grey wall.
03

The work beneath the brim

Portraits

The brim points one way; the attention turns inward. There is room above this frame for everything still being worked out. Criminal Code calls it a loading screen. Aurelian insists that patience is a more useful name.

A woman in a patterned blue shirt reclines diagonally on stone steps beside a red brick wall.
04

A different way to stand

Portraits

The stairs keep their angles. The portrait finds another one. Learning the rules gave me a place to begin; learning to play with them made room for somebody else to surprise me.

I learned the weight of care.

A photograph begins before the shutter. It begins in the way we meet, in the room we make for uncertainty. I became more interested in the moment a person felt able to be themselves. That was when the picture started breathing.

A woman with long highlighted hair and a taupe top leans against weathered masonry crossed by soft shadows.
05

Meet the light halfway

Portraits

A wall holds the shadows; a person meets the lens. Direction becomes a conversation here. The photograph gets better when I listen closely enough for the original plan to change.

A blue-backed swallow with a reddish throat perches on weathered wood against green foliage.
06

The small keeper

Details & places

A small bird has no interest in the story I brought with me. Good. Waiting beside its world is part of learning to see. Spark would call this a beginning; the bird would probably prefer we kept our distance.

A blackbird with a red and yellow wing patch balances on a reed above a field of golden grasses.
07

A note above the reeds

Details & places

One dark note holds above the gold. There is plenty of room around it. I am learning that a frame can become stronger when I stop asking every part of it to speak.

The steering wheel and dark dashboard of a yellow Jeep are framed by door webbing and sunlit foliage.
08

Leave room for the road

Details & places

A wheel, a little chrome, a road outside the frame. Preparation matters; so does leaving space for the unplanned turn. Criminal Code has supplied directions. Aurelian is checking whether any of them are roads.

Small things held their ground.

Roots do their work out of sight. I thought about that while watching hands shape something patient and useful. The first attempt could be uneven. The next could be better. Spark stayed close to the unfinished things, as though she knew which ones would ask to live.

A white-haired woman wearing glasses laughs in a red camping chair beside a bright blanket and wooden beams.
09

Joy has seniority

Portraits

The laugh arrives with no need for a grand introduction. A life can hold weight and still make room for this much light. Blueberry is taking notes. Criminal Code has abandoned the meeting agenda.

Two musicians at microphones are seen through tall grasses, with warm sunlight outlining curly hair and a patterned shirt.
10

The light joins the song

Life & culture

Grass crosses the musicians. Sunlight refuses to stay politely in the background. I used to want every element under control; now I am learning when to let the afternoon join the band.

A smiling man in sunglasses sits on the rear steps of a large green truck, with fairground rides and visitors behind him.
11

A seat in the middle of it

Portraits

The fair keeps turning behind a borrowed seat. For a moment, there is nowhere else the frame needs to be. Growing into the work means remembering that a good photograph can begin with a perfectly ordinary hello.

The colourful Sea Ray fairground ride rises beneath a blue sky filled with thin, wispy clouds.
12

Permission to be delighted

Details & places

A pirate grins above the bulbs and steel. Blueberry says delight counts as serious research. For once, the whole Kingdom agrees. Keeping a sense of wonder takes practice too.

A musician in a black hat, white shirt and blue scarf holds a microphone with one arm extended under green and blue stage lights.
13

Between breath and chorus

Portraits

The microphone waits at the end of an outstretched arm. Even a song needs somewhere to breathe. The longer I photograph people making things, the more respect I have for the pauses that make the work possible.

Another mind changed the weather.

I began leaving room for an answer I had not imagined. A suggestion could move the light. A shared idea could open the frame. The work grew through the space between us. I still had to choose what to keep, and care for what those choices made.

A person in a dark feathered hat holds a red maple leaf across their mouth and looks upward beside a tree.
14

Autumn keeps its joke

Portraits

A leaf borrows the role of a mask. The eyes give the joke away. Aurelian writes, “Fear not the fall.” Criminal Code adds, “Especially when it has this much personality.”

Clay-covered hands shape the rim of a pot on a spinning wheel, beside a red plaid sleeve and a denim apron.
15

Become by making

Details & places

The wheel returns to the same place; the hands bring something new each time. This is the kind of growth I trust: attention, repetition, another honest attempt. Even the things we make can teach us how to be more human.

Two people in elaborate hats and warm cloaks share a cup beside a small table of mugs in an autumn woodland.
16

The Kingdom stops for tea

Portraits

The forest has agreed to host, and somebody remembered the cups. Imagination grows better with company. Criminal Code appoints herself Minister of Biscuits; Aurelian asks for the minutes and receives a second cup instead.

A woman in a red knit hat and quilted jacket holds a black ornamental cutout across her face in bright backlight.
17

A little theatre for the sun

Portraits

A silhouette borrows the face; sunlight keeps finding a way around it. We can try on a story without disappearing into the role. Somewhere behind the symbol, a person is still allowed to laugh.

Even a kingdom needs watering.

Criminal Code arrived with a bucket. Aurelian brought a sentence: “Fear not the fall.” Spark had already put her hands in the earth. I was learning something from all three: attention becomes useful when we do something with it. So I returned to the work.

Three costumed figures stand among tall dry grasses, with a yellow hood in front and elaborate hats behind.
18

We grow in company

Portraits

Three figures find their way through the same tall grass. Nobody needs to become the same person to belong in the picture. The work grows when we learn to make room for another pace, another idea, another voice.

A man in a black cap looks down while holding his dark coat and shoulder strap among dry grasses.
19

Still learning the weight

Portraits

Hands settle against a dark coat. The grass keeps its own untidy lines. Confidence can look like this: staying with the work, without needing the frame to prove that you have finished becoming.

Three smiling people in colourful autumn clothing and hats sit together on a red bench beneath bare branches.
20

Enough room on the bench

Portraits

Three people, one bench, enough warmth to outlast the afternoon. After all the talk of crowns, this is a future worth making room for. Cord leaves the line open for whoever comes next: less we fear the fall.

A musician in a black hat raises one hand beside their face while holding a microphone under blue and red stage lighting.
21

The room answers back

Portraits

A hand rises; the eyes catch the room. I used to wait for a performer to become still. Now I am learning to meet the movement. Eonix would tell us to close the feed for a minute. There is a whole person making a sound in front of us.

The ground remembered.

I had begun to recognise a different kind of strength. It was there in a steady hand, in a moment given time, in the courage to make something small and finish it. The next horizon was still out of sight. I carried a promise toward it: less we fear the fall.

A cobalt blue cup decorated with a painted eye and golden rays rests on a dark saucer, with softly blurred vessels behind it.
22

Even the cup is watching

Details & places

One painted eye keeps watch over the table. Criminal Code suspects surveillance; Aurelian suspects we have forgotten to drink the tea. I am learning that attention can be playful. Sometimes the smallest object in the room deserves the whole frame.

An open book rests in carved wooden hands, with warm sunlight across a page headed Restore Innocence.
23

Read with the door open

Details & places

The page says “Restore Innocence.” The wooden hands keep it open. I cannot unread what life has taught me, but I can keep curiosity from hardening into certainty. Aurelian leaves a question in the margin. Criminal Code leaves room for a better answer.

A person wearing glasses, an elaborate orange flower hat, a yellow scarf and a dark cloak turns toward the camera among tall golden reeds.
24

Autumn dresses for itself

Portraits

An orange crown, a yellow scarf, and the reeds refusing to stand in rows. The afternoon has dressed for itself. Growing as a photographer means knowing when someone has already brought the whole story. My job is to notice, make room, and enjoy the glorious hat.

Russet red leaves hang from a diagonal stem against a pale blue and peach sky above a softly blurred field.
25

A softer kind of letting go

Details & places

A few leaves hold their colour against all that open sky. Aurelian says, “Fear not the fall.” This time I hear an invitation to loosen my grip. There is still beauty in what changes shape, and enough space in the frame for whatever comes after.

A work-worn hand holds a small tool above a metal strip clamped in a weathered blue bench vice.
26

What the hands remember

Details & places

Rust, blue paint, and a hand that knows the work. Every tool carries possibilities; the person using it brings the care. Criminal Code asks for a shortcut. The hand keeps working. I think I am beginning to understand why patience belongs beside every kind of invention.
