Yearbook Academy / Make a choice
Composition Playground
Move the subject. Change the space. Watch the story shift.
A starting point, not a score
The thirds can separate a subject from the centre and give the surrounding space a role. A centred subject can feel direct or balanced. An edge can create tension. None of these positions guarantees a good photograph.
Make the empty space mean something
Imagine the subject is looking or moving. Leave space in that direction, then try the opposite. The shape stays the same; your expectation changes. Use the horizon to decide whether the sky or ground carries more of the picture.
Take it outside
Choose one ordinary subject. Make three photographs: centred, on a third, and close to an edge. Keep the light and subject similar. Compare what each frame makes you notice first.
